What does it mean to live an intentional lifestyle?
This is such a broad statement and can mean many different things to different people. But what it actually means is that learning how to enjoy what you have is an essential aspect of leading content and fulfilling life. It's not about getting everything you want but rather finding happiness in what you already possess.
While we may have good intentions to live a more intentional lifestyle, several barriers can prevent us from doing so.
One of the biggest obstacles is ourselves and our mindset. We often get caught up believing that we don't have enough time to focus on intentional living or that being busy is a badge of honor. Another barrier is the fear of change. It can be difficult to break free from our daily routines and habits, even if they aren't serving us well. We may also feel overwhelmed by the prospect of making significant changes to our lifestyle, which can prevent us from taking action.
External factors can also get in the way of intentional living. For example, societal pressures and expectations may prioritize productivity and material possessions over personal fulfillment and well-being.
This can make it challenging to prioritize intentional living and focus on what truly matters to us. Ultimately, overcoming these barriers requires a shift in mindset and a willingness to prioritize intentional living. It may also require taking small, deliberate steps toward our goals rather than trying to make significant changes simultaneously. Doing so can create a more fulfilling and meaningful life with time, effort, and a commitment to intentional living.
Tips for Intentional Living
Take a moment to list three things you have recently achieved or are proud of.
Tune out the noise. Today's world is filled with distractions that can quickly pull you away and distract you from your values and intentions.
Identify your values. What’s important to you, and what do you believe in? Defining these things will help you remember what to focus on daily.
Set a morning intention. What do you want to make a priority each morning?
Be mindful of the media you consume. Refer to number two for this one, and limit your time on social media.
Choose to be kind. When you're kind to others, the world reflects it to you, and we can all use a little more kindness in our lives.
When you're feeling like you want more, remember the things you love about yourself and your life right now.
Do something that brings you joy. Think about the things that bring you joy. How can you incorporate more of those things into your daily life?
Ask “why” before you buy.
Practice active listening. Don’t think of your response while another person is talking.....and put down your cell phone.
Make time for self-reflection, whether that’s one day a week or every morning,
Do something you can be proud of. What does that look like for you?
Question your “have to's” and "should's." Why are you doing them? Are you also making time to do the things that you want to do?
Give yourself a break aka forgiveness. Practice giving and receiving grace.
Try to savor and appreciate the little things in life, like the warmth of the sun on your skin, the taste of your favorite food, or the sound of laughter.
Action!
Carving out a dedicated slice of your day, even if it's just a precious few minutes, to engage in an activity that brings you joy or introspection can profoundly transform your perception of life. It's crucial, however, that you do this deliberately, placing yourself at the top of your to-do list.
